Kilograms, a former Fort Saskatchewan restaurant and cafe, plans to move to the park in the month to bring a Caribbean flavor to the local dining scene.

Before the pandemic, Kilograms was located next to Town Hall in downtown Fort. There, he not only served breakfast and lunch to walk-in customers such as muffins and sandwiches, and loyal customers who loved their Eggs Benedict, but also filled catering orders to feed 80. students per day as well as company contracts. But the closures put an end to the company’s initial success and forced it to be a restaurant and delivery-only business.

Owner Sharon Francis, also known as Chef Sharon, plans to focus on what she is preeminent at: cooking what she knows best: Caribbean cuisine. While the location has not been finalized at the time of publication, she is considering a commercial kitchen in the park, likely along Broadmoor Boulevard.

After closing the Fort restaurant, Francis wondered what the demand would be for Caribbean food, so she placed a poll on the Sherwood Park and Area Food Reviews Facebook page, where she was inundated with excited and curious residents. . This encouraged her to forget about the typical breakfast and lunch menu she offered at the Fort and focus only on Caribbean food.

“The response has been crazy,” said Francis The news. “This is our niche.

Dishes include roast chicken, jerk chicken, ackee and salt fish, oxtail, curried goat cheese, and red snapper, served with rice, peas, and plantain. Unsurprisingly, at $ 13 a plate, his jerk chicken is the most popular menu item.

“I grew up in a Caribbean family and learned other things along the way,” said the Jamaican cook.

Kilograms has already received praise on the Sherwood Park and Area Food Reviews Facebook page, where customers rave about the ease of home delivery in the Park and Fort area, and the food’s reasonable price.

Currently, Kilograms processes 40 to 50 orders per week over two cooking days.

Opening a business in the midst of the pandemic doesn’t bother Francis.

“It’s risky at all times, even with the pandemic, but I think we have a good number of followers and support. This kind of cuisine does not exist in Sherwood Park. When you have a different type of product, you are not competing with anyone, ”she noted. “I have clients who eat Caribbean food two or three times a week. They never tire of it.

To help give the business a solid foundation for its second start, a GoFundMe page – “Help Kilograms Find A New Home” – was launched on Tuesday March 9 and aims to raise $ 10,000. Donations will help Kilograms rent a commercial kitchen, hire a part-time employee, pay for registration, permits and some utilities, and cover part of the meal preparation.

“We realize that these are difficult times for everyone. No donation is too small. A simple donation of $ 5 can help us reach our goal. Unlike normal GoFundMe campaigns, any donation will be refunded for future purchases, ”the page read.

Francis is optimistic for the next chapter of his business in the park.
