Caribbean restaurant Canje opens, along with new businesses in downtown Austin

1. Canje, a restaurant serving Caribbean cuisine, opened on October 5 at 1914 E. 6th St., Ste. C, Austin. This is the latest culinary concept from Emmer & Rye Hospitality Group, which also operates several other popular Austin restaurants including Emmer & Rye, Henbit, Hestia, Kailmotxo, and TLV. Chef Tavel Bristol-Joseph runs the kitchen at Canje with a menu featuring cuisine from his native Guyana and various Caribbean islands.

2. BlackDenim Records, a new independent label, announced its launch in Austin on August 31st. The label is planning a citywide showcase next year that will also serve as a competition offering a $ 100,000 recording deal and a publishing deal to an Austinite.

3. True Rest Float Spa opened on July 15 at 2919 Menchaca Road, Ste. 105A, Austin. Tanner Heim, co-owner of the spa with Liz Wolf, said people can experience “the absence of everything” while floating in water and Epsom salt. Next to Suite 104A, Heim and Wolf will be opening an independent yoga-focused spa called Lizard Yoga in mid-October. 512-954-7118.

4. The Verde Store, Austin FC’s official retailer for club merchandise, opened September 18 at 506 Congress Ave., Austin. Fans of the Austin Professional Soccer Team can purchase Austin FC-themed Yeti jerseys, clothing, and merchandise in the store.
