Lando Jamaican Café owner to open new Caribbean restaurant in Huddersfield

An authentic Caribbean restaurant will soon open in downtown Huddersfield, filling the void that grew after Discovery Bay closed more than four years ago.

Orlando Hinds, 41, who was born in Jamaica but raised in Brixton, London, said Lando’s will open on Friday, October 22, after months of renovating the premises on Half Moon Street.

A regular in the restaurant game, this will be his fourth restaurant to have had restaurants in Coventry – The Spice of Life and more recently, from 2013 to 2017, Lando’s Jamaican Cafe in Lower Fitzwilliam Street, Huddersfield.

He learned the art of cooking from his late mum Pearline who ran her own restaurant and bar in Jamaica.

Orlando said: “When I was growing up in Spanish Town, the original capital of Jamaica, there were no fast food restaurants, so I learned to cook from a young age, around 12 years old.

“I am passionate about cooking and I love to please by making people happy with my food.

“The restaurant will be fully licensed and will offer a wide variety of Caribbean food and I look forward to welcoming everyone on the 22nd. It will be a great night.”

There will be 26 place settings downstairs while the upstairs area will be used for private functions.

And Orlando is looking for a Sous Chef, so anyone interested should get in touch.
