New restaurant offering tacos, margaritas and Caribbean fare opens in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Taco Borracho, a new restaurant on Michigan Street NE serving tacos, margaritas and more, has opened in the city’s Midtown neighborhood.

The restaurant, located in a renovated building that once housed a car wash, was created by Angel Gonzalez, a builder and developer whose work has focused primarily on the Belknap Lookout neighborhood.

“You’re going to love the food you get because it’s really authentic,” he said.

Taco Borracho held its grand opening on Thursday, May 5, in recognition of Mexico’s Cinco de Mayo holiday. The restaurant features an elegant interior with decorative lighting, a marble bar and an outdoor patio.

The restaurant seats 135 people and its menu offers nine varieties of tacos, as well as a Puerto Rican steak sandwich, a Cuban sandwich. It also offers Pastelillos, a Puerto Rican dish similar to a meat turnover. In addition to starters, the restaurant offers fries and salsa, soup, desserts, and more.

Taco Borracho also has a full bar, including a selection of beers, wines, margaritas, tequila and more.

The restaurant is Gonzalez’s first foray into the food and beverage industry.

“I was looking for something to do – something different,” he said.

Gonzalez said so many people turned up for Thursday’s grand opening that Tacos Borracho ran out of food. He said there was a long line to get in and some people unfortunately had to wait an hour or more for their food. A Facebook post from the restaurant on Friday apologized to those who waited a long time or couldn’t be seated.

“We have a lot of work to do and we are doing it,” the message read. “It was a long night for our team after closing. We had some tears and emotions, but an absolute determination to solve the problems and we will.

The restaurant pushed back its opening to 3 p.m. on Friday as staff waited for more food to arrive.

“We sold everything yesterday,” Gonzalez said.

The hours, as of now, are 11 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, the restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. and on Sunday it will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Gonzalez said.

Despite the opening day hiccups, Gonzalez said he received many positive comments about the restaurant.

He said many customers told him, “What you did here was amazing. Michigan Street needed it.
